Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to attend?
Night to Shine is completely FREE for guests and their caretakers.
How would you define an individual with special needs?
The event is open to anyone with physical or cognitive special needs, ages 14 and older. We do not have specific guidelines for the eligibility of guests in relation to the legitimacy or severity of their disabilities.
Does a Guest have to walk the red carpet to get into the Prom?
Not at all! We realize that not everyone will be comfortable walking in to cameras clicking and people cheering. We will have a separate door for those who desire a calmer entrance.
What if a Guest gets overwhelmed during the Prom?
We will have a “Sensory Room” available for guests who need an area with less stimulation.
Does the Parent or Caretaker of the Guest stay with him or her the entire night?
We encourage Parents and Caretakers to enjoy the Respite Area set aside with food and entertainment just for them. All of our Guests will be assigned an individual “Buddy” who will accompany him or her throughout the evening. If a Parent or Caregiver wishes to stay with their Guest the entire evening, we ask them to register as a volunteer and attend the “Buddy” training. For safety reasons, all people on the premises that evening need to be registered as a Guest, Parent/Guardian, or Volunteer.
How many Parents/Caretakers of each guest are allowed in the Respite Room?
We are able to accommodate two Parents/Guardians per guest.
Does the Respite Room cost anything to enjoy?
Like the Prom, the Respite Room is completely FREE for Parents/Caretakers.
Does it cost anything to volunteer?
No. All costs associated with volunteering will be paid by Messiah Lutheran Church.
What should I wear?
Volunteers who do not work as “Buddies” will be given a t-shirt and encouraged to dress comfortably. Buddies should wear anything from their “Sunday Best” to formal prom attire depending on personal preferences.
Do I need a background check?
Yes, everyone over the age of 18 needs to have a background check completed by Messiah Lutheran Church in the past 18 months. This will be done at no cost to you.
When is the mandatory Volunteer Training?
There are two sessions to choose from: Monday, January 14 from 6:30-8:30PM and Saturday, January 19 from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Messiah Lutheran Church
