Frequently Asked Questions

GUEST FAQ:

How much does it cost to attend?

Night to Shine is completely FREE for guests and their caretakers.

How would you define an individual with special needs?

The event is open to anyone with physical or cognitive special needs, ages 14 and older. We do not have specific guidelines for the eligibility of guests in relation to the legitimacy or severity of their disabilities.

Does a Guest have to walk the red carpet to get into the Prom?

Not at all! We realize that not everyone will be comfortable walking in to cameras clicking and people cheering. We will have a separate door for those who desire a calmer entrance.

What if a Guest gets overwhelmed during the Prom?

We will have a “Sensory Room” available for guests who need an area with less stimulation. This area is located away from the dance floor in an area with low lightening and much less noise. There will be trained volunteers assisting guests and providing activities to help them relax.

Does the Parent or Caretaker of the Guest stay with him or her the entire night?

We encourage Parents and Caretakers to enjoy the Respite Area set aside with food and entertainment just for them. All of our Guests will be assigned an individual “Buddy” who will accompany him or her throughout the evening. If a Parent or Caregiver wishes to stay with their Guest the entire evening, we ask them to register as a volunteer and undergo a background check through Messiah. This is for the safety of our guests.

How many Parents/Caretakers of each guest are allowed in the Respite Room?

We are able to accommodate two Parents/Guardians per guest.

Does the Respite Room cost anything to enjoy?

Like the Prom, the Respite Room is completely FREE for Parents/Caretakers.

What is the general timeline of the evening?

Guests will arrive around 6:00 and register. They will drop off their coat, pick up their corsage or boutonniere, and meet their Buddy. They can then proceed to the red carpet where their arrival is announced. After walking down the red carpet, they are welcome to stop by the hair and make-up area where volunteers from nearby salons will help them get ready for the night ahead. Male guests can get their shoes shined. The dance floor will be opened and ready for dancing at 6:00. Dinner will be served after 7:00 and a crowning ceremony will take place at 8:30. Dancing will be the prime entertainment, but we will have a karaoke room set up as well as a room with games and crafts, and a photo staging area.
